My boyfriend is stingy...er, no, he's fiscally responsible. So, he moaned/groaned when I bought C.B. NYC. "Another guidebook?!" But it was WONDERFUL and paid for itself! It would have cost more NOT to own it!
Frommer's NYC Free & Dirt Cheap
"In the land of $49 burgers and $1,000-a-night hotel rooms, author Ethan Wolff shows that the adventurous budget traveler can still do the Big Apple in style. Written for residents as well as visitors, this guide has plenty of good clear maps and a chapter of free and cheap itineraries."

The Cheap Bastard's Guide to Chicago, 2nd Edition
I bought this book for my daughter who just moved to Chicago, after I previewed an older edition at a bookstore. We both couldn't put it down, it was so exciting to read about activities and deals a poor college student or anyone else who likes a bargain can take advantage of. It's very well organized and indexed.

She writes about some of my favorite spots, but also so many things I never found on my own. I wish I had read this years ago.

Even the most seasoned DC local would pick up dozens of tips, from tango lessons at the Argentinian Embassy and haircuts at Sassoon Salon (yes that Sassoon, and both free) to half price tickets to the cities biggest events and the inside scoop on DC's most popular venues. Thousands of hours of activities are described here, but not for thousands of dollars

How can you transfer money from one or more metrocards
to another on the NYC subway?
ANSWER
Bring ALL the cards to any station booth
and they will combine all the funds onto one new card, FREE!
•TIP: don’t do this during RUSH HOUR!
•TIP: for expired cards, ask for a free, pre-paid envelope which is also pre-addressed to their home office where you will receive credit for what is on the card. But you have to ASK for this, they didn’t mention it when I tried! After asking, I got it immediately.
