  1. HOW TO READ LABELS

What are the FOUR things

you must read on food packaging

before buying?

  1. It’s confusing out there. With names like “Reduced Fat” and “Low Fat” 1% fat, 2% fat, how do you know which is healthy? Here is what we learned from a month at the Pritikin Longevity Center.

  2. 1.Your body cannot properly handle food that has more than 10% of its calories coming from fat. The excess is stored, as fat, and your body manufactures a substance to transport this - yep, it’s cholesterol! The cholesterol we hear so much about is not coming so much from the foods we eat but from the body manufacturing it in response to high amounts of fat in the diet.

  3. 2.Of course, our genes play a role here and there are people who can eat a typical high fat American diet and not develop meaningful heart disease. But they are the exception.

  4. 3.HOW TO COMPUTE THE TRUE PERCENTAGE OF FAT

  5. BulletMultiply the Total Fat Calories by 9. This is because each gram of fat has 9 calories.

  6. BulletDivide the number of grams of Fat by the total number of Calories

  7. BulletSo, for example if the product has 100 calories and 5 grams of fat, you thought that might be good, right? Now you know you muliple the fat grams by 9 (because each gram of fat has nine calories, remember?) = 45. So out of the 100 total calories, 45 come from fat = 45%! Once in a while this is okay but if you have heart disease Pritikin recommends you keep it closer to 10%. This will actually reverse the buildup of plaque in the arteries. Read more about it here.

DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS THAT WORK

Many if not most supplement claims are not backed by solid scientific research. In fact, some don’t work at all or are dangerous. Here are some that DO work, along with scientific citations:

How Long to Keep it?

  1. How long to keep spices? Okay, I admit it.. I still have spices going back to the Reagan administration... maybe earlier. But I don’t use them.. wonder if they will ever grow in value like old comic books, coins and other stuff that I didn’t keep? Well, anyway, as this article explains, outdated spices probably won’t hurt you but they will be weak at best in delivering flavor.

OLIVE OIL - 6 MONTHS

The Journal of Food Science published a report in 2009 that healthy compounds in olive oil can deteriorate after six months. The health aspect of olive oil come from polyphenol antioxidants. These have been shown to help ward off cancer and heart disease.

WHOLE WHEAT FLOUR - 3 MONTHS TO A YEAR

Most people don’t know that whole wheat flour spoils four times more quickly than white flour. It should be stored in a sealed container kept in the refrigerator for up to three months; in the freezer for a year.  The two greatest threats to whole wheat flour are heat and oxygen.

NUTS AND NUT OILS - 3 to 6 MONTHS

A great source of healthful fats but can deteriorate quickly. Should be stored in a cool, dry place. I personally use a vacuum-sealing device with its special containers.
